I was having painting withdrawals, so I decided to work on my skills for painting animals. After thinking about it for a few, I chose a Black Stallion. This is a great animal to paint because of the shimmery black coat and muscular body. So here is my attempt at a Black Beauty! I painted the beauty on a 9x12 stretched canvas using Liquitex Basics Acrylic Paint.
Enjoy the progression shots!
After 3 layers for the background I went ahead and drew the horse outline, and colored it in with Mars Black. I left off the hair because it can be added at anytime and instead of doing an outline, I wanted it to be free flowing.
I added color to the hooves, some shimmery shading and the hair.
I slowly built up the hair and face features. I really wanted it to pop.
Once the horse was complete, I moved on to trying to add detail to the grassy field. I also added some debris to give the impression that he kicked up some dirt.
I really built up the grass and dirt using a small brush and a pallet knife, I was "cutting" the paint on to the canvas to give it a sliver look, like blades of wild grass.
Unfortunately, I do not have any good lighting at the moment, but I think its still beautiful even with the poor lighting.
This was a lot of fun and definitely satisfied that painting itch. I hope you enjoyed the painting as much as I.
