Mountain Stream is a 16x20 painting I made for my mother-in-law. She loves mountains, rivers/streams/ponds/etc. and forests. So I went with a river, snowy mountains and trees. I started with a reference image but I eventually went my own way, and no longer used the reference image. So because its different, I won't share the image. This painting took me a few days to do because I was busy with errands and such, but I got it done and am very happy with it. So here are the progression shots:
Trees are my weakest skill, but each time I do them, I notice I am getting better, you will see in this painting, I still have work to do.
I decided to add a fallen dead tree to the painting, I think its a nice touch.
I added moss to the dead trees to give it a more realistic look. When you go into any forest or woody area, and there are dead/fallen trees, you will find some amount of moss. Especially when its near a water bank.
The water, I will slowly build up to look like its fast moving water, I feel I did a good job catching it. This is my first fast moving water painting.
My final area to focus on are the rocks in the foreground. I went with a darker look like its in a shadow. I gave it some minor highlights and used blue like its a reflection from the water.
You can't tell in these pictures, but I also painted the sides so it can be hung up with out a frame and will look good.
Once it was dry, I added the wall hardware and took my final picture with it on my wall. I think it came out really good. I can't wait to give it to Bev (MIL) and see what she thinks. I will be doing another painting soon that will be another gift for a family friend. It will be just mountains covered in snow. She loves snow =)
